Millie Small made a huge hit by covering the song “My Boy Lollipop” done originally by American singer Barbie Gaye but with Millies own unique Ska take on it. To this day it remains one of the best selling Ska/Reggae songs and undoubtedly gave many people around the globe their first glimpse into the then fresh emerging Jamaican music scene (Wikipedia LINK).
Ska music was synomnous back in these early days with “Blue Beat” as witnessed by Millie being labeled on the cover of this album “The Blue Beat Girl” and the line “Some call it Blue Beat- Others call it Jamaican Ska, but whatever you call it, it is a great new dance step”. (Blue Beat LINK).
The popular early Ska guitarist Ernest Ranglin (who some credit with the invention the Ska guitar “Scratching” sound) plays on this album as well as being credited with the albums arrangement.
This You Tube clip taken from a 1964 Finnish Television program is a testament to how big of an international phenomenon that Mille Small had become with this hit song.
“My Boy Lollipop” was also covered years later in 1982 by the 2 Tone band Bad Manners done as “My Girl Lollipop” (found HERE).
